Invoicing without VAT
Most UK sole traders under the £90,000 turnover threshold aren't VAT registered — and shouldn't charge VAT. Your invoice simply shows your prices with no VAT added, and must not display a VAT number.

Frequently asked questions
Can I invoice without charging VAT?
Yes. If you are not VAT registered you must not charge VAT or show a VAT number. An invoice with no VAT is correct and compliant for businesses under the £90,000 threshold.
What should a non-VAT invoice include?
Your business name and contact details, the client, a unique invoice number, the date, a description of what you supplied, and the total. No VAT lines and no VAT number.
When would I need to start charging VAT?
When your VAT taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period, or you expect to exceed it within 30 days. You can also register voluntarily.
